A triple interview show today - Gus Worland, Professor Jane Pirkis and David Hollier - there is SO much in this show that has the potential to change peoples lives.
In ABC's series Man Up, Gus Worland asks why so many Aussie men are taking their own lives.
What he discovers is a debilitating pattern of men wearing masks to hide their feelings, championing stoicism, self-reliance, not sharing feelings nor expressing emotion. Gus looks squarely in the face of these masks and gently encourages them to be removed. He leads the way by showing how to be a strong man who is sensitive, caring and unafraid to connect with people and how they are and wait for the answer. In short, he can see the importance of being a role model and walking the talk.
My amazing guest today was Ashleigh Bell, another local dynamo, ex vet and now training to the a personal trainer, who is doing amazing things with her life. She brought great insight to the discussion about losing weight having lost close to 60kg and made it about so much more than food. We asked questions about why programs and initiatives to address obesity are not working, why people put the weight back on, lose motivation or perhaps never even start?
Tim England, a local demential champion was my guest in the studio today to talk about Dementia.
What it is - a condition, a syndrome, a collection of conditions that cause distress. It is epitomised by confusion. What it isn't - a disease, yet there are over 100 different diseases that can cause a clinical dementia.

Today's show was a vital look at the abuse uncovered in the 4 Corners Australia's Shame episode which aired this week on the ABC Guests include Sally Neighbour, the executive Producer for 4 Corners, Jean Gamble who works as a psychotherapist in private practice, Dean Quirke currently working with individuals coming from disadvantaged backgrounds about anger and behaviour on primary prevention programs in schools
Judy Hopwood was my guest today to discuss Homelessness in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai community. Judy worked as the former MP for Hornsby and set up the original Homelessness Task Force in Hornsby. Hornsby are pioneers when it comes to delivering outreach which does not make homeless people a collective group and puts the whole issue in the 'too hard basket' but works with people who are homeless as individuals who need tailored support. The Task Force now incorporates Ku-ring-gai and are addressing the growing concern of people looking for assistance in the Gordon area. The fundamentals of this research are transferable anywhere in the world, learning from each other.
Key for change is relationships and seeing all people as equal regardless of their circumstances.
My guests in the studio today were Jean Gamble who work in private practice and Trudi-Anne Carmody who works as a hairdresser and has a wealth of experience connecting with clients on any number of issues.
This interview was full of humour about the reality of peri-menopause, menopause and post menopause yet is applicable to anyone who knows, lives, or is a woman of any age :-)
I am so honoured to have hosted this conversation with 2 very experienced workers in the domestic abuse field - Senior Constable Malcolm Baker and Peter Foster.
I hope you develop an understanding of abuse and our responsibility to all be part of the solution.
Jessica Rowe AM is the new ambassador for KYDS Youth Development Service - she is clearly very passionate about her involvement in the organisation as you will be able to tell from the interview.
Dave Sturmer is a local man who just stood out to me as someone we should all know. He went to Vietnam at the tender age of 20 and experienced horrors, lost friends and came back to Australia a changed man. Slowly but surely he has chosen to look at what happened and do something about how he was feeling and the way he was expressing that, he didn't want to hide in the 'grog' and behave the way he was.
I am short of time this week so I thought I would ensure I got the interview up with Peter Foster from Lifeline...Enjoy and share. They run the program again later in the year so if you missed out on this course then plan for the next one.
The interview from last week with Jean Gamble fits very well with this audio and should give us all food for thought about the mess we can create when we do not take time to address the things that hurt us!!! I know I have been much more aware since I did these two interviews! |
