Equality and What's on!

6/6/2015

Equality was the topic of the day - I think this topic is bigger than big and actually the root of a great many illogical happenings in our world.  Here is how the thread came together from the news of the week...
  • Marriage equality - in the shape of the Irish vote for same sex marriage.
  • Relationship equality in the shape of the terrifying rise of awareness around domestic abuse.
  • Abuse of power is a lack of respect for the equality of all human beings - this can encompass the abuse by adults of children as seen in the investigations into the abuse of children in the Catholic church and other organisations.
  • Abuse of power and a flagrant disregard to equality has been seen in the unfolding FIFA corruption allegations.

Cyberbullying Special Broadcast with TripleH 100.1fm

5/12/2015

This week was the culmination of a number of weeks introducing the guests on the show today. We were hosted by Asquith Girls High for Triple H’s first school Outside broadcast – the first of many I hope. The recording is a little scratchy but don't let it that stop you listening to the gems delivered in the 90 minute show.

My guests today were Lauren and Tess from Asquith Girls High School, Snr Constable Lynda Hart the Hornsby local command School Liaison Officer, Kym Carlson Clinical Manager KYDS, Leonie Smith 'The Cyber Safety Lady' and, via the airwaves, we had a previously yet specially recorded interview with The Honourable Paul Fletcher MP, Member for Bradfield and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications.

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Youth Forum

5/6/2015

I was invited to the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Youth Forum 2015 last week, a one day forum on mental health which was hosted by the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Youth Network which is now in its 4th year. This year's event was facilitated by a company called Batyr.

3 of the participants were my guests today...Jacob, Anshul and Rohit. They were amazing and it was great to see what they got out of the day as well as listening to the pearls of wisdom they shared during the show.

At the start of the forum the participants were asked to speak to their neighbours about mental health and the words used around it. When asked how many thought the words used during their discussion around mental health were positive - 3 people in the whole room put their hands up. The stigma around mental health is huge....more on that a little later.

Cyber abuse and Anzac Day from a Youth Perspective

4/26/2015

I don't think there is ever a show where I am not blessed with who I have interviewed and today is no different. Once again we had Senior constables Linda Hart and Stefanie Murray and this weeks subject was Cyber abuse and how they address it in both primary and secondary education.

I also had phone interview with 'The Cyber Safety Lady' Leonie Smith and two wonderful young studio guests Annaliese and Oliver to talk about Cyber abuse and Anzac Day. Annaliese and Oliver were also pretty amazing reading the What's on's so I will ensure that is something my guests do more often!

#YHMD2015, Time4Kids Lock up, Marian Street Theatre

4/18/2015

What a show - I loved every minute of today even though the technology was a challenge! No laptop, no satellite therefore no news, there was a buzz all the way through the first 10 minutes or so...boy oh boy was something trying to put me off. But NO!! How can that happen when you have some amazing interviews ready to go? I re-recorded the intro...substantially shorter than the original but it did what intros do!

Now to my interviews - Chris Stone from Y Foundations talking about #YHMD2015, Daniel Allars from Hornsby PCYC talking about the Time 4 Kids PCYC lock up, and guests in the studio Margie McCrae and Rhys Briggs.

Responsible Use of Alcohol - all age support

4/2/2015

What if our experience of alcohol in younger years can lay foundations for patterns we take into adult life?

My guests in the studio today were Youth Liaison Officer Senior Constable Stefanie Murray and School Liaison Officer Senior Constable Lynda Hart and we had a phone interview with Chris Raine from the ever growing organisation Hello Sunday Morning.

We kicked the show off with a look at what role the police play in overseeing parties, how they can support to ensure the party goes smoothly but offering some basic tips on how to plan and what things to watch out for at your event.

There are many reasons why the police might stop by, and if they show up...don't panic! but if you really don't want to have their company then follow some basic tips...

3/26/2015

Utiling a mobile phone
when you are driving
is the same as being mid-range on an alcohol breath test
Guests today were Senior Constable Lynda Hart, a School Liaison Officer who was a wonderful support sharing information about some of the Learn to Drive programs available in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai area. We also had Louise Talbot who has worked for two MPs on the Legislative Council on and off for the past 25 years. Louise advised us on processes and understandings around voting. We had 2 students dropping in today - Angus and Jeremy both made appearances on the show in between their after school activities. All in all I hope you will find some very practical tips!!

Mind Your Language - Refugees and Asylum seekers

3/19/2015

The team from Mount St Benedict College crammed into the studio today to bring the most amazing show to the Triple H listeners. The show talked about the language we use around refugees and asylum seekers and asks if we have a responsibility for influencing the debate through the words we choose.

Language used about refugees has the potential to dehumanise vulnerable people
and make acceptable what is absolutely NOT acceptable

International Women's Day for Young Women

3/10/2015

In todays show I was joined by 4 extraordinary young women. What can I say, I was blessed. They took me on a whirlwind tour of what it is like to grow up female and all the things that happen and matter to them. I probably spoke way too much but by the 2nd half of the show everyone was feeling much more comfortable with expressing how they felt and we could have gone on for another hour!
